VaultDRTM APM
Why do I need to validate compatibility?
As the system being recovered (i.e., DR system) is booted with the DR tools provided in the respective VaultDR Plugin, it is important to ensure the drivers required for your specific hardware (NIC, SCSI, etc…) are compatible with VaultDR.
Validating compatibility of VaultDR for:
Offline for Intel x86 Online for Windows
Online for Linux
VaultDR Offline for Intel x86
The VaultDR Offline system for Intel x86 is comprised of two components that provide to create a DR image of a client machine running any Intel x86 Operating system. It includes the VaultDRTM Server Plugin on server side that is compatible with a wide list of platforms (Please refer to Release Notes for supported linux distributions). The system being protected (i.e., DR system) is booted into the VaultOS component based on a Linux Kernel (2.4.18) as an interim step during the DR backup or DR recovery. It loads the necessary device drivers to system memory on the target machine to control and access the DR system's NIC and SCSI adapters during this process. As a result these Linux drivers for the DR system's NIC and SCSI adapters must be included in VaultOS or be manually loaded by the user for VaultDR to work properly. While VaultDR is compatible with a wide variety of NIC and SCSI adapters (list of compatible adapters), it is still recommended that you validate before purchase that the drivers required for your specific DR system's NIC and SCSI adapters are included and compatible with the drivers provided by VaultDR.
Three easy steps to validate that your NIC and SCSI drivers are compatible with VaultDR
  • Download the VaultOS ISO image for Intel x86 Client to a system that has a CD/RW burner
  • Burn this ISO image to a CD. (On a windows system you can typically just drag and drop it on the CD Burner.)
  • Boot the DR system from the VaultOS Boot CD you've just created. (Note: The CD drive must be configured as the first bootable device).
If the NIC and/or SCSI adapters are auto-detected and loaded by VaultOS then the appropriate Linux drivers are included for your DR system and your system is VaultDR compatible.
If the drivers are not auto-detected, then you should first try manually selecting a device driver from the Driver selection window (see section DR.4.2a "Manually Selecting Device Drivers for Located Devices" of the VaultDR™ System for Intel x86 Client Users Guide). If this is successful then your system is also VaultDR compatible.
If it is not successful then you will want to secure a Linux 2.4 driver (preferably 2.4.18 or later) binary (i.e., file with a .o file extension) for your NIC or SCSI adapter from the adapter vendor and manually load it on the DR system via floppy (see section DR.4.2a "other" option). If this is successful then you will be able to use VaultDR but it will require that you manually load these drivers from floppy each time you perform a DR backup or DR recovery.
Please contact BakBone support should you require assistance. If none of these options are successful then this release of VaultDR is incompatible with your system's NIC and SCSI drivers and will not work properly.
VaultDR Online for Windows
The VaultDR Online system for Windows is comprised of two components that provide to manage a DR image of a client machine running Windows Operating system (Please refer to Release Notes for supported MS Windows versions). It includes the VaultDR™ Online Plugin on the system being protected (i.e., DR system) to take a DR image while the system remains on-line and active. And it requires the VaultDR™ Offline for Intel x86 system (Offline for Intel x86) to provide the ability to recover the DR Client.
The steps to validate that your NIC and SCSI drivers are compatible with VaultDR™ are the same as the VaultDR Offline for Intel x86.
VaultDR Online for Linux
The VaultDR Online system for Linux is comprised of a single component that provides to create a DR image of a client machine running Linux Operating system (Please refer to Release Notes for supported linux distributions). This plugin must be installed on both the NetVault Server and each desired NetVault Client to take a DR image while the system remains on-line and active.
Please note the VaultDR Online for Linux does not require the VaultDR™ Offline for Intel x86 system or any other VaultDR system to provide the ability to backup and recover the DR Client.
There are no particular steps to validate the device drivers for this plugin. Please contact BakBone support should you require assistance.
