SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA - August 7, 2002 - INPUT, a leading IT market research firm released this week a new study on "Backup and Recovery Software: A Competitive Study on Total Cost of Ownership," and found that BakBone Software, a global provider of storage management software, offers at least 30% lower total cost of ownership (TCO), compared to Veritas (NASDAQ:VRTS) and Legato (NASDAQ:LGTO). The study found that BakBone's customers are significantly more satisfied, overall, with their NetVault Backup and Recovery solution and that BakBone delivers the highest value based on its lower price. NetVault also scored the highest satisfaction ratings (4.6 of 5.0) on performance, reliability, and scalability.
Backup and Recovery solutions have become the key to well-managed data environments. The cost of acquiring and operating a Backup and Recovery solution must balance with the benefits of ownership, including making the best use of staff resources, and achieving the highest possible performance. The total cost of ownership (TCO) study evaluated real-world customer experience through actual production implementations.
Following the analysis of its research results, INPUT found that BakBone Software has an overall competitive advantage. BakBone's NetVault requires less time for backup and recovery tasks, allowing IT staff to spend more time on proactive tasks. Veritas and Legato customers require up to 75% more on-site visits than BakBone customers for solution support. Regardless of the category, whether concerning scalability, compatibility, reliability, ease of implementation or management, speed of deployment, features, or cost, BakBone's backup and recovery product was rated highest in satisfaction nearly every time.
Steve Kenniston, Technology Analyst with The Enterprise Storage Group, commented, "ESG did not participate in this specific research, so it would be inappropriate to comment on the conclusions without further investigation. However what I find interesting is that the results do reflect trends we're seeing in the backup and recovery space - end users satisfaction with these solutions are closely tied to their ease of installation and use, combined with the cost of ownership measured against resource demands. BakBone is in a real position to leverage these results because of its NetVault product's strengths."
The TCO study measured the end-to-end costs associated with owning and maintaining a particular vendors solution, including a delineation of one-time purchase costs, recurring operating and support costs, and the business cost of downtime. TCO data was collected through unbiased, confidential, third party, telephone survey research.
