POOLE, UNITED KINGDOM - April 12, 2002 - BakBone Software (TSE: BKB), a global provider of storage management software is being used by the Physics Department at Oxford University – one of the world's most prestigious academic institutions - to back up Unix and Linux systems which hold data on Particle Physics research for around 600 staff and students.
BakBone's easy-to-use and flexible product, NetVault 6.5 has been installed on an IBM 8-way SMP server, with a Qualstar AIT-3 library attached and is backing up locally attached disks of around 1TB of data, plus other network attached storage used within the group. NetVault will also provide a service to enable users to archive less frequently used datasets to tape. The files being backed up by NetVault are used mainly for code development and computation - a mixture of code and script and large quantities of data. Typical datasets are a few hundred GBs spread over a number of sequential files of approximately 2GB each.
Ian McArthur who heads the IT for the Physics Department said: "NetVault provided the functionality we needed at an affordable price. Being an academic institution cost is always a consideration and we found NetVault to be one of the only low-cost solutions for the Linux platform.”
For most institutions and companies today loss of data is a major concern and the impact of losing primary data such as original research would be huge. Much of the work being backed up by NetVault has had significant creative input from users – research papers, theses etc. Losing this work would not only involve hours of processing time to re-input lost data and some data would never be able to be recreated. A workable and flexible solution was therefore of vital importance to the department.
Sean Jackson, Marketing Manager EMEA for BakBone Software said: "One of the main tenets on which our products are based is to bring a flexible and affordable solution to the market. Data loss is a concern to all institutions and companies of all size. Ensuring you have a reliable back up system such as NetVault is the only way to safeguard against expensive data loss.”
NetVault will not only safeguard the valuable data, but will also bring other benefits to the department. McArthur continues: "Before installing NetVault, our Unix backups only made use of basic operating system tools, so the extra facilities are very welcome. We expect the improved usability of the software will streamline the system operations so that it will become much easier to find and restore user files. In combination with the tape library it is hoped that the backup schedule can be much more automated than previously thus reducing operations time loading tapes.”
