BakBone Software, Spectra Logic Announce Strategic Alliance.

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA, January 22, 2001 - BakBone Software, Inc. (TSE: BKB, OTC: BKBOF) and Spectra Logic Corporation, two companies with distinguished track records of technical innovation in the data storage industry, today announced a strategic partnership aimed at providing channel partners and corporate end-users a full range of data protection solutions to meet their storage needs, with a special focus on the convergence between network-attached storage (NAS) and storage area networks (SANs).

Under the terms of the agreement, the companies will cooperate on coordinated marketing, development and engineering activities designed to produce solutions that offer increased performance, availability, and manageability across a full range of companies

The first result of the BakBone/Spectra Logic alliance is the certification of Spectra Logic's Spectra 2000 and 10000 tape libraries with BakBone's NetVaultTM storage management software. The Spectra 2000, utilizing the TreeFrogÒ architecture and the Spectra 10000, utilizing the BullFrogTM architecture, are designed to meet growing storage needs of emerging and mid-sized corporations, but are also used to protect mission-critical data for industry leaders such as Yahoo! (NASDAQ: YHOO). The certification tests were jointly performed at BakBone's interoperability lab in San Diego, California and at Spectra Logic's interoperability lab in Boulder, Colorado.

"Spectra Logic has consistently delivered high-quality, high-performance hardware to the marketplace," said Jack Corrao, BakBone Software's President and Chief Operating Officer. "As SAN/NAS convergence and storage virtualization rapidly become reality, companies must be able to trust that the solutions they implement will work today, as well as be viable tomorrow as their needs evolve. The BakBone/Spectra Logic partnership meets those needs."

Spectra Logic's tape libraries are designed with robust performance and customer ease of use as primary features; NetVault's reputation has been built on the same qualities. In addition, the Spectra 2000 and Spectra 10000 tape libraries; equipped with industry-leading AIT drive technology, enable companies to meet the requirements of today's e-business economy, such as rapid storage and retrieval of the information they need to better serve their customers.

With last week's announcement of NetVault 6.03, BakBone Software has radically enhanced the ability to easily and powerfully backup and restore a company's corporate-critical data, across a wide range of computer platforms, and storage configurations. NetVault 6.03 represents a dramatic departure from solutions offered by other firms, which require substantial upgrades and intensive technical support for companies seeking to grow their storage capabilities. It continues BakBone's tradition of offering software that combines powerful performance with unparalleled ease of use. In addition, the software is designed so that it can be installed within minutes or hours, instead of the days or weeks required by competing products, and can be easily adapted to add additional devices within seconds.

"We place a high priority on our relationship with Network Appliance (NASDAQ: NTAP), and our ability to work together to maximize storage in a NAS environment," said Nathan Thompson, Spectra Logic's Chief Executive Officer. "In our joint testing with BakBone, we were excited by NetVault's ability to help us breeze through backups and restores using NetAppÒ filers. Our libraries, in combination with NetVault and NetApp filers, produce the kind of results that most companies can only dream about."

Thompson and Corrao cited technological advancements, such as the Internet, that are changing the way businesses utilize computing resources. This requires evolutionary changes to storage subsystems used to manage and protect the vast amounts of mission-critical data being created worldwide. The combination of NetVault and Spectra Logic's tape libraries solves these problems, across the full range of today's rapidly evolving data storage environments.

Thompson and Corrao also cited their companies' mutual commitment to the reseller channel as a key factor in establishing the alliance. The two men noted that the alliance will produce certified solutions that channel partners can confidently implement at customer sites.
