Alexandria, a town of 50,000 people, has taken bold steps to ensure that both its city services and its business development efforts continue to pay dividends for residents. It has invested in a centralized, high-performance frame relay Wide Area Network (WAN), enabling fast and reliable data transfer between city departments, from fire and police departments to utilities and sanitation.

Perhaps the best part of that investment, according to Jimmy Koonce, the city's Manager of Information Systems, is a powerful data storage and retrieval solution driven by NetVault. Alexandria's WAN is deployed across all seven of the city's governmental campuses. E-mail, data files, applications, Internet access and much more are carried on the network to city employees from all departments. Three main databases support the system, running on a Windows NT-based network. The city's applications reside on UNIX-based machines.

"We have seven or eight servers running a number of server applications, user applications, e-mail and more. We have to keep all that data flowing, but we have to back it up as well. Our old system was a nightmare logistically. It took us over nine hours to complete routine backups; the multiple platforms made it far more difficult for us to do the job easily."

Koonce and his staff were looking for a centralized, secure solution with faster transfer speeds, scalability, and improved ease-of-use. Working with its integrator partner InfoSystems, headquartered in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to develop a complete solution, it got all these features with the addition of NetVault.

Not only was the network administrator able to run backups faster, Koonce added, but his job actually became easier. Since less maintenance is required across the system, less travel is required between the city's campuses. "Overall, it's a cleaner, better, more secure situation," Koonce said.

Koonce says the amount of data travelling through Alexandria's WAN has nearly doubled in the last two years. If the community is to remain responsive to residents and attractive to incoming businesses, he adds, the integrity of Alexandria's data networks must continue as a top priority.
