BakBone NetVault 6.03 Introduces NDMP, Windows 2000 Support; Provides Full-Scale, Multi-Platform Backup and Restore.

NETWORLD + INTEROP, ATLANTA, September 26, 2000 - BakBone Software (TSE: BKB, OTCBB: BKBOF) today announced the forthcoming release of the upgraded version of its NetVault™ storage management software, saying it will incorporate the highest level of cross-platform compatibility and functionality available on the market.

The announcement was made at the Networld + Interop conference here in Atlanta, where BakBone is an exhibiting vendor (booth #569).

NetVault 6.03 will include support across a wide range of computer platforms, including Windows 2000, NT 4.0, and 95/98, as well as a full complement of UNIX platforms (HP-UX, AIX, Compaq Tru64, SCO UnixWare 7, etc.), Novell NetWare and leading Linux platforms like RedHat 6.1.

NetVault will also incorporate full support for the Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP), making it possible for companies to do enterprise-wide backup of network-attached storage devices (NAS) that support the industry-standard protocol. This new feature further extends NetVault's leading capabilities to provide unparalleled, easy-to-use data backup and restore functionality, regardless of the storage environment, be it LAN-based NAS, FibreChannel or SCSI-based storage area networks (SANs), or a combination of both technologies.

In addition, NetVault 6.03 will make additional plug-ins available to provide hot backup support for some of the most popular databases available today, including:

  • IBM DB2
  • Informix for Solaris
  • Informix for Tru64
  • Sybase for Windows NT
  • Oracle online for Tru64

Those databases are added to NetVault's existing plug-in roster, which includes SAP R/3 Microsoft SQL Server and NCR Teradata.

The new version of NetVault continues to include DirecSAN™, BakBone's client transfer model, enabling backups to essentially bypass servers and stream data directly from backup clients to tape storage devices. This revolutionary feature cuts down on potential network bottlenecks, smoothing the process and speeding backup and restore times.

"While NetVault was introduced to the North American market in August, our development teams worldwide have continued their research to make NetVault the finest storage management software available on the market today," said Jack Corrao, BakBone Software's President and Chief Operating Officer. "The upgraded version of NetVault, which will debut at Comdex, will make it more simple than ever for companies to take advantage of the full range of tape-based data storage options, be it LAN-based, or NAS, or SAN. NetVault already enables them to add additional tape devices and grow their storage capabilities with unparalleled ease as their needs increase, an issue virtually every company faces today. Version 6.03 will help data-intensive enterprises of all sizes meet the challenge of securing their most important information, and making it quickly available when it's needed most."

Since its North American debut last month, NetVault has repeatedly won praise from industry analysts, users, storage-centric resellers and publications. Last week's edition of eWeek magazine reviewed NetVault, and proclaimed, "Net Vault Aces Stable Backup." Federal Computer Week gave NetVault high marks in its review, saying the software "is one of the top choices to safeguard (corporate) data." Aberdeen Group research director David Hill said, "Companies are seeking storage management software that meets their escalating needs today, as well as provide them with easy scalability for tomorrow's requirements, including SANs. NetVault has demonstrated the ability to accomplish both objectives." And Charles Yonker, Chief Operating Office of StorNet, says his customers "have told us repeatedly they are seeking high-performance storage management software, which is robust, scalable and most of all, easy to use. NetVault easily meets and exceeds those requirements."

Pricing for NetVault 6.03 will remain at current levels, with workgroup configurations beginning at $1,000 for Linux and Windows NT, and $3,725 for UNIX.
