TOKYO, JAPAN, December 11, 2000 - BakBone Software (TSE: BKB, OTC: BKBOF), a global provider of software-based storage management solutions, today announced that Square Company, Japan's leading third-party developer and publisher of home video game console software, has chosen BakBone's NetVault™ storage management software as part of its effort to protect terabytes of data that will be generated from its new, global PlayOnline service.
PlayOnline (www.playonline.com) is scheduled to debut shortly after the first of the year. It is an Internet-based service, offering subscribers worldwide online gaming, shopping, movie, and entertainment information.
"We will be taking in tremendous amounts of information, and needed to find the best way of managing and securing that data," said Koichi Ise, PlayOnline's system director. "NetVault proved to us that it is the storage management software most capable of protecting that data today, and growing with us as people around the world log on to our site, and entrust us with their valuable information."
BakBone's NetVault features the ability to easily manage the most intensive backup, restore and archiving functions across a wide range of computer platforms. NetVault's scalable, advanced modular architecture operates across distributed heterogeneous client/server and multi-user environments, and is specifically designed for the next generation of network storage applications, such as storage area networks (SANs), as well as today's requirements. The forthcoming version of NetVault, scheduled for release next month, supports network-attached storage, and is compatible with Windows 2000. The current version already runs across multiple platforms, including most flavors of UNIX, Linux and Windows NT.
"PlayOnline's needs are typical of many companies today, both online and traditional," said Patrick Barcus, BakBone's Vice President, Pacific Rim Sales and Marketing. "It must handle rapidly growing amounts of data, it must ensure that the information is safely stored and quickly accessible, and it must do so without the hassle and complexity associated with traditional storage software. NetVault's ease of use throughout the entire product lifecycle solves those problems. It gives PlayOnline the security of knowing that the data provided by its subscribers…the data it needs to succeed in business… is there when it's needed most."
NetVault is available through a worldwide network of storage-centric channel partners, carefully selected for their knowledge of the marketplace, and solution-based efforts on behalf of their customers.
